Agile/Scrum
Those in IT will know about this. We are currently using this at my client site. Seems all the rage and a lot of clients are asking for it.

Anyone else been exposed to it?

But, for many, Agile/Scrum has become their sole reason for living.

It won't end in tears, because, by it's very nature, it won't end. Every time a new idea surfaces the team charges off in a different direction like a group of 4 year old kids chasing a ball one of them has kicked away.

Agile is a way of working that focusses on working code instead of documents. To more quickly adapt to changing needs or misunderstanding of needs. With scrums you focus during a period on only the work selected for the scrum. You then demo it to business and start a new scrum. There is also a daily stand-up meeting to keep communication running quickly and shortly.

FRAGILE doesn't always work, stay away, daily scrums are good to pick up and resolve stream blockers.

It's strange watching ex-Prince2 people get their head around the change in attitude / role required for Agile.

I'm coming from a service / operational area but enjoy watching PMs really not adjusting to letting go of the 'I'm in control and this needs to be done by 10:30 Monday morning approach'

Laughable but, where I work, it suits us better

If you want to produce shit that works for a while and then dies a death then this is definitely the way to go. Its just the equivalent of RAD in the 90s and 'XP' in the naughties. The cheapskate way of developing.

This involves requirements engineering, dragging out of clients what they actually want instead of just giving them what you've convinced them they want.

Sounds like a bad idea to me...

Yup. Am 'Certified Product Owner'. It can work pretty well. Watch outs are people using the methodology as an excuse to document nothing citing, "conversation not documentation", which isn't actually true at all.

Also can result in software being designed a bit piecemeal without an overall strategy/solution architecture, so have to be careful on that. But in general my experience with it for delivery is positive.

And THAT is the golden key to Aladdin's Cave. get THAT right and everything else pretty much drops into place.

Trouble is, there's no glamour in just that, so ways have to be thought up to make things sexy and big up mundane roles - hence all these flavour-of-the-month "solutions"..

Oh yes indeed.
It works pretty well where I am and the daily meetings are 15 minutes max so not too tedious.
We haven't missed a release date since I started at this place (14 months) so something is working.
An added advantage is that it pretty much eliminates scope creep as the business need to think about exactly what they want/expect right from the off.

That's all old news, what you need now is a black belt in Six Sigma, then you can Lean on anyone.

Seriously (trying to avoid my default cynical facetious approach) its not about the methods of designing the technology anymore it's all about making any work process including IT efficient, so IT has to be tied to business strategy and needs and there needs to be a clear business case with cost benefits and return on investment.

My Senior Management Team has just been replaced with a load of consultants who are basically very experienced PMs, I am SCRUMMED out of my mind :(

More useful for PMs as they can see a project's status at a glance in JIRA, and get daily feedback at stand ups. For a developer like myself, the stand ups and updating JIRA every day are an overhead. Also, the sprint reviews and restrospectives can get a bit samey after a while, other than the demoing of what's been developed obviously. However, having customers as part of the agile team works well and saves time when clarifying requirements, issues etc. It's JAD/RAD and timeboxing by another name.

Using it at work at the moment, makes it easier to develop for clients who are a bit flaky.

Some of the daily meetings are a bit of a waste but combined with JIRA in an agile environment it's actually making life quite a bit easier.

We're using it to allow a more incremental approach to releases rather than massive updates once in a while.
